Biography
Lisa Vollrath was born in New York and raised in California. She put herself through college working in the wardrobe department at Disneyland, and went on to earn both a B.A. and M.F.A in design for the stage. She has designed costumes at regional theatres and Shakespeare festivals throughout the United States, and taught costume design and stage makeup at two colleges in North Central Texas. She spent six years working at the corporate offices of the world’s largest craft retailer, and two years at a local arts and crafts publisher, before starting her own company, Ten Two Studios, where she now designs products and teaches online classes for mixed media artists.
Artist Statement
I’ve spent most of my life as an artist of one sort or another. Having lived for many years in both California and Texas, my work has been influenced by Mexican culture, and long, hot summers filled with flowers. I’m inspired by color, nature, and my garden; combining these inspirations while exploring a variety of media and techniques means my work is constantly changing and evolving. My pieces often begin with a photograph, which I turn into a line drawing, and gradually cover in layers of paint, pastels, and pen work, to reveal the truth I see in the original image. Guiding this transformation brings me immeasurable joy.
