I started this 24 inch square mixed media piece on luan plywood back in October 2017. I painted the rough figure, but wasn’t sure how to fill the space around her. She sat unfinished until I got the call for submissions for this year’s Dia de los Muertos show at the Bath House in Dallas. To fit the theme of Memories Written in Verse, I added the halo, which contains the Spanish text of Mary Elizabeth Frye’s poem Do not stand at my grave and weep.
I framed the piece myself, which was more of an epic adventure than I expected.
